Kaylyn’s Story

December 2016

Meet Kaylyn. This beautiful little girl was born with a Congenital Heart Defect called Hypoplastic Left Heart Syndrome (HLHS).  After birth, she was in the hospital for ten months before coming home for the first time. Now, at three years of age, she has gone through three open-heart surgeries for HLHS called the Norwood, Glenn and Fontan as well as one surgery to replace her Blalock-Taussig (BT) Shunt between her Norwood and Glenn procedures.  The Fontan procedure took place in November 2017 and she was released after spending one month in the hospital. She was able to spend Christmas at home and that was the best Christmas present for her family!

Kaylyn also has a twin brother Kristian who was recently diagnosed with autism.  Kaylyn’s father works very hard for his family and her mom, Karen, is a very strong caregiver who is devoted to taking care of Kaylyn and her brother.  It is a full time job as Kaylyn fights this lifelong condition.  Karen’s days include going to multiple doctors’ appointments, therapy for Kaylyn, and taking care of both children’s daily activities & needs.  Kristian recently started preschool and Kaylyn will also start preschool as soon as she recovers from her most recent surgery. Karen would like to go back to school and start working full time once Kaylyn is fully recovered.

Aditya’s Heart is proud to support this family who exemplifies strength in the face of adversity. We are happy to announce that, right before Christmas, our organization was able to provide a grant of $1000 to cover costs related to Kaylyn’s recovery to provide a little bit of relief among all the challenges they face. We send Kaylyn our very best wishes on her continuous progress!
